Interim Pastor
CUCC has called the Reverend Dr. Gerry Hanberry as our interim pastor. Pastor Hanberry most recently served as Interim Associate Pastor for Parish Life at Evangelical Reformed UCC in Frederick. MD. In addition to several other interim pastor roles, for almost 13 years (1995-2008) Gerry served as pastor and worship leader at Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville, MD. Pastor Gerry has participated actively in community programs. He is passionate in leading local, regional, and global mission outreach.
Gerry grew up on a farm in South Carolina. He has five adult children (three daughters and two sons as well as eleven grandchildren). Today, Gerry sets aside time to enjoy working in his yard and garden. Gerry bicycles throughout Frederick and Carroll counties in Maryland and in Pennsylvania. He and his wife of 26 years, Patricia, reside in Frederick, MD.
Music Director
David McGarvey currently serves as Music Director at Columbia United Christian Church. David began his formal music training at Oberlin and Peabody. He holds an Associate of Arts degree in Music from Howard Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Music degree from Towson University. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Johns Hopkins University. David has studied piano with noted jazz pianist Alan Blackman and classical piano with concert pianist Dr. Lisa Rehwoldt.
Before coming to CUCC, David’s experience as a church musician included memberships in the Proclamation Choir (Amherst, OH) and Joyful Noise (Columbia, MD). The Proclamation Choir produced a self-titled recording; the Joyful Noise group recorded songs for the release, Christmas at New Hope.
As a co-founder of Moonstruck Jazz, David performs professionally on piano and bass in the Washington/Baltimore area. His composition “Paul’s Waltz” has been published in The Baltimore Real Book: Volume 1.
Administrative Assistant
Joel Selekof has been CUCC’s Administrative Assistant since early 2008. He works Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Joel produces the weekly bulletins for Sunday Services, provides the weekly “News and Events” announcements to everyone by e-mail, maintains the CUCC directory, and does numerous other activities to keep our office running smoothly.
Before he retired in 2007, Joel worked almost 40 years as a computer programmer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He is also an accomplished piano player. For 10 years he played piano twice-weekly at the Nordstrom store in Columbia Mall, entertaining customers by playing the oldies. He currently plays at assisted living and retirement communities. Joel also enjoys singing and is a member of the Bet Aviv Congregation choir.
Joel has an adult son Kevin and one grandson, Logan. He lives in Columbia with his wife of 35 years, Joan, and their cat Ari.
