Our Church Life

CUCC's church life is centered on our weekly worship on Sunday mornings. Our service is a blend of traditional and contemporary elements from our three denominations--the Church of the Brethren, the Disciples of Christ, and the United Church of Christ. We are blessed with many talented musicians in our congregation, so music plays a big part in our worship. In the spirit of the Disciples, we celebrate communion on a weekly basis. Grape juice is used so that all, including the children, feel welcome. On the first Sunday of the month, we honor a CUCC tradition by celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and sharing joys and concerns in a prayer circle that rings our sanctuary. Following the worship service, we gather for refreshments and fellowship and meet for Adult Education.

Children play an important part in the life of our church. Sunday mornings, they begin worship with us in the sanctuary, then leave for Sunday school classes following the Time for Children. We have a full range of Sunday school classes, plus nursery care for the youngest children. CUCC also has a confirmation class for middle school children. Together with other Christian congregations in the Meeting House, we hold a four-day Vacation Bible School in June.

In addition to the worship service, we find many ways to celebrate and strengthen our community. Led by our Nurture Commission, we gather for potluck meals at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and pretty much any occasion we can find - weddings, new babies, graduations - you name it! We also hold congregational fun nights and special seasonal events like our annual harvest bonfire party, Christmas caroling led by the choir, a summer pool party, and family movie nights. CUCC also has an adult Bible/book study and fellowship group, People of the Covenant, which meets twice a month.

One of the highlights of our church year is CUCC's annual beach retreat held at the Christian (Disciples) Conference Center in Bethany Beach, Delaware. The retreat offers everyone - singles, couples, and families - an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of fall activities. Weather permitting, we hold church on Sunday morning on the beach. It is a glorious way to worship.

Beyond our congregational events, CUCC supports many community activities, often in partnership with the other congregations of the Meeting House and the broader spiritual community. CUCC also supports a number of community outreach groups in Howard and Baltimore counties. Through the efforts of our Caring in Action and Peace & Justice Commissions, we actively support Howard County-based PATH (People Acting Together in Howard), Grassroots, the Howard County Coalition for Peace and Justice, Howard County Friends of Latin America, and the Interfaith Coalition for Compassion, as well as Supper Club and Earl's Place (United Ministries) in Baltimore. We were honored to receive the Arc of Maryland?s 2007 Dignity Award, which recognizes significant contributions to the dignity of persons with developmental disabilities and the promotion of their inclusion in the community.
